In my class “interface lab” we learned physical computing in a frame that explores and discusses inputs and outputs. To put that in other terms, we learned how to build with arduino while exploring UI and UX beyond touching glass with your finger. When thinking through this project, I initially wanted to use physicality for the input by mimicking the way wii controllers work for Mario kart. Using the wii motes for racing always annoyed me in a really delightful way. But, my instructor pushed me even further to create a wearable head mounted controller. I used the arduino nano 33 for my controllers and utilized the built in gyroscope to send the tilt of each player’s head to my processing sketch via a web socket. In playtime, I received feedback about how this is a great way to create play for those who can only move their heads. That was my favorite reaction. I really loved this project because it was physical, digital, and got people smiling.
